'11 Wellcome Duathlon

A big "thank you" to all those who turned the 2011 Wellcome Calves duathlon into a wonderful happening!!

Lantau Calves & Buffalos Charity

As you are aware, part of the Calves' entry fee went to charity. This time we collected HK$2,125 for the Homeless Shelter Project in the New Territories. Apart from cash our Buffalos and Calves also contributed clothing, toiletries, linen & towels, and children’s educational needs, which were greatly received.

Adrian Pringle (year 2001) presented a cheque of HK$21,000, which combined funds raised by the recent Calves duathlon, a Buffalo Triathlon held a few months ago and other donations.

This now takes our donations raised for the homeless shelter up to over HK$230,000 and close to 100 pallets of clothing, shoes, and other essentials.

Thanks for your support, and do let us know if you'd like to contribute or join us next time we visit the Homeless Shelter Project.

Comments from parents:

"Thanks so much for putting on a World Class event Sunday!  I have included a photo of my daughter because the smile on her face shows exactly how much fun she had as a result of your hard work.
Please send our thanks for all the other Buffalos and Volunteers who helped out. TH & LH"

"You did a great job of all the organising of the race on Sunday. Well done, I'm sure it was a huge effort, but well worth it to see the kid's enjoying the race. JW"

"I thought the event was totally FANTASTIC!!! Thank you so much for all your hard efforts! See you at the next event! Regards. KM"

"Our son had a disappointing race after a fall wherein he hurt his knee, but it had nothing at all to do with the organizing. We'll definitely be there next year and want to say a big thank you to all of you for all the thought and planning that went into the event. It's a great event and one we are so thrilled you offer for our kids in DB. Next year will be even better! Kind regards and thanks again. CB"

"Thanks for making all of this happen. It is a great way to encourage my kids to be healthy and competitive. Growing pains will I am sure be refined. I salute you! SC"

"It was a tremendous event and it was VERY much appreciated.  I saw that there was some confusion at the end, during the awards ceremony, but this did not detract from the enjoyment of the event overall! It is the sort of thing that my daughter will remember for a VERY long time to come... she didn't even want to take a bath last night because she wanted to keep her number on her arm and leg! On the night before the course there were tons of kids out there training- events like this have a lasting impact!  It made me feel lucky to live in a community with people who care enough to go through the effort to organize something like this! PD"

"I wish to congratulate Lantau Buffalos for having taken the initiative to organize such an amazing event. Our son was delighted with the experience and has asked that we enrol him in every duathlon or triathlon to be organized in future. What a great way to spend a Sunday morning.. JF"

"Thanks to all the organisers. Human nature is indeed to focus more on what went wrong compared to what went right. Indeed the ceremony left room for improvement but you've already spotted this and in our case a Katy Perry CD did miracles. All in all I do think it was a great success and our children thoroughly enjoyed the race. I would like to thank you all for your efforts as it's a great opportunity for the children to participate (and compete if they'd like) in such an event. I think the race as such was organised like clockwork and besides the unfortunate event with Ambre no serious accidents happened. I also know how much "negotiation" it takes to get this done in DB. Thanks again for all your efforts and I do hope we'll have more of this in the years to come. BJB"

"Just a quick line to say thank you for organizing the event.  It takes a lot of time and energy to make something like this work and it is appreciated. Thanks too for being flexible with the last minute change with our daughter. CS"

"Thank you for organising it.  It was our daughter's first time but she really enjoyed it and it has made her want to do it again. We appreciate all your hard work and effort. Regards. SR"

"Thanks a lot for the organization, our kids were so happy! Thanks again, you did a great job! CS & MS"

USEFUL INFO FOR PARTICIPANTS

RACE DAY

Race Gear: road or mountain bike, helmet (mandatory throughout bike leg), running & biking gear, sunglasses, etc. Make sure that your bike is in order; any competitor with a bike deemed unsafe will not be allowed to start the race. Please ensure in particular that the brakes are functioning properly.

Arrival: please make sure to be on time, preferably one hour before the start of the race. This gives you time to ride your bicycle around the course to get to know it better. We also recommend that you do a bit of jogging to warm up the running muscles.

Registration: the registration desk (which is next to the Transition Area) opens at 06:45. Please check the schedule above for the exact time that you can register. Each participant is kindly requested to go to the registration desk to confirm their presence and to get the race number written on their arms and legs. There will be enough marker pens so that parents can help us with that.

Transition Area (TA): when TA opens you can practise getting on and off your bicycle. Once you are ready you can put your bicycle, helmet and other gear at your numbered spot inside TA. Our bike specialist Tony will check each participant’s bicycle to make sure that there are no safety concerns.

Briefing: will be held next to the Registration Desk near the Transition Area. There will be a short briefing before the start of the race to explain the rules, the overall course and things to watch out for. Participants will be expected to know the course, so we won’t do a tour.

Race Course: Races 1 and 2 are identical in length, as are Races 3 and 4.

• Race A (1997-1998) & B (1999-2000): run 1 long lap, bike 2 laps, run 1 long lap.

Bike (2 laps): turn left, go past point E and head towards point F; slow down when you get to point F; you get off your bike and make a sharp U-turn; you then get on your bike again and go down towards the coastline promenade in front of Siena Club; take a sharp right turn at the bottom of the slope (be careful not to go too fast here!), ride along the promenade, take a right towards Discovery College, pass the school, go straight (stay on the left side of the roundabout) and then turn right into the Playground Area (point G); follow the path and cycle straight onto Siena One Drive; take a left and cycle up to the end of Siena One Drive (point H); make a U-turn and follow the road down to Siena Avenue; watch out for traffic as you turn right onto Siena Avenue; ride all the way back to the starting area; ride past the roundabout, past point A1 and head towards the coastline promenade; turn right onto the promenade, go straight until you get to point B, make the U-turn and head back to the starting area; when you get to the starting area keep going straight (do not turn into the transition area!) for your second lap; as you finish your second lap make sure to stay left, get off your bike right before the line that marks the beginning of the transition area (point C) and run into the transition area; put the bike back onto the bike rack, then take off your helmet and start running;
