SPORTSWORLD - NEW BALANCE

2012 ULTIMATE FITNESS CHALLENGE

Q: Did you have fun?

A big thank you to everyone who made the Ultimate Fitness Challenge a big success! Let us know what you thought of it!

On Sunday February 26,2012 more than 120 Lantau Calves braved the chilly but dry conditions to compete in no less than eight different events. Competitors raced on a scooter, ran through an obstacle course, did a standing long jump, threw a bean bag as close to a target as possible, rowed on a rowing machine, performed a plank until they collapsed, stretched their back and legs as far as pain would allow, and finished it all off with a 25-meter swim in Discovery College’s swimming pool. Points were given according to the ranking in each event.

There were awards for the top three finishers in each event. Also, the best performer of each individual event (performance compared to the average of the competitor's category) was bestowed the title of Queen or King of that particular event. Furthermore, five-year-olds Anna Vogiadjis and Yuli Verheijke were honoured as the youngest Lantau Calves on the planet.

Parents and children alike highly enjoyed their active morning at Discovery College, and we are quite confident that we will hold a similar challenge next year

Check out the Picasa slideshow for photos of the event. Please send us your pictures, so we can share them with everyone.

Arrival: try to arrive early. This gives you time to get familiar with the different events. Ages 1998-1999 and 2000-2001 should come earlier (registration closes at 7:45 a.m.) than the other categories.

Registration: you register at the registration desk near the end of the stairs on the Lower Ground Level in Discovery College.

Briefing: there will be no briefing before the start of the race. However, race marshals at the registration desk will help you out with any race-related questions that you may have.

EVENTS

Event procedure:  each group/category of competitors will be supervised by four Guides. The Guides are in charge of keeping the group together during the event and when walking to another event area. Please listen to their guidelines. When you get to an Event Area you will be welcomed by the Event Manager, who will explain the event rules. The Guide or Event Manager will call out your name and ask you to stand/sit just outside the Event Zone. You then wait until you are called into the Event Zone to do your event – the Guide will guide you if necessary. When you have finished your event you return to your spot in the waiting area, and wait there until the Guides are ready to take the group to the next event area.

Here are the events that you will be doing!

UFC TUTORIAL

• DC playground speed challenge --- Go to the playground area. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you will line up at bottom of the slide. When the Event Marshall gives the signal, you run up the slide, onto the platform, jump off on the right side of the bridge, run towards the rope section, get on the ropes and move to the right without touching the ground; you then get hold of the monkey bars (do not touch the ground) and move to the other side of the bars before touching the end of the monkey bars to finish. Avoid touching the ground, as you will receive a 20-second penalty each time you do so. After your race you wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• 100m scooter race --- Go to the start of the scooter race, just next to the grassy field behind Discovery College. Make sure to put your helmet on. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line with your scooter. If you do not have a scooter, you will be using one provided by the organisers (you will have signed up for a scooter rental on your registration form at a cost of $10). When it is your turn you line up at the starting line, and wait for the starting signal. There will be one or two other athletes racing with you, but it is your time that counts, not the place in your heat, so go as fast as you can and don't try to hit the others. After the race you return to the starting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• Bean bag accuracy throw --- Go to the bean bag throw area on the grassy field. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you will be given a bean bag. At the sign of the Event Marshal you throw the bean bag as close to the target as possible. After the distance between your bean bag and the target has been recorded you can try again. After two tries you return to waiting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• Plank challenge --- Go to the plank challenge area next to the fence. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you prepare for the ‘plank’ position: both forearms aligned on the ground, straight and tight body, only 10 toes touching the ground. At the sign of the Event Marshal you get into the proper plank position and hold this position as long as you can. You will get a maximum score if you can maintain this position for 3 minutes. After the challenge you return to the waiting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• Stretch challenge --- Go to the stretch challenge area next to the fence (closest to the hill slope). The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you will be given put your feet against the stretch machine and straighten your legs. You bring your arms forward as much as you can over your toes, and keep both your hands still for at least two seconds before letting go. You have 20 seconds for this, so you can try more than once if you like (the 2nd or 3rd time is often better, as your muscles get stretched more step by step). After your 20 seconds are up you return to the waiting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• 90 seconds rowing --- Go the rowing area inside the playground. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you will be sit down on a rowing machine and strap your feet tight. At the sign of the Event Marshal you starting rowing as fast as you can, and you do so for 90 seconds. Afterwards you return to the waiting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• Standing long jump --- Go to the standing long jump area next to the rowing area. The Event Marshal will call your name and ask you to wait in line. When it is your turn you will stand behind a line and jump as far as you can. You can do so two times. You must jump with both legs at the same time. Afterwards you return to the waiting area and wait until everyone is finished, before going in group to the next event (if this one is not your last event).

• 25m swim (one length of the pool) --- You proceed to the swimming pool quickly after your last event on the Lower Ground Floor. As you get there follow the marshall to the swimming pool waiting area (just outside the pool area, next to the elevator shaft) and listen to their instructions of where to sit. Wait until your name is called and follow the marshall to your starting position at the other side of the pool. The starter will then ask you to go into the water – no diving start. You start in the water (hold onto the side) and swim 25 meters as fast as you can in any style you like. Athletes in the 2004-2006 age category are allowed to use flotation devices and hold onto the rope if needed, the other categories cannot use any aids. When you finish your swim please wait for the whistle, after which you get out of the water and proceed to change clothes in the 5th floor changing rooms. You then go down to the Lower Ground Floor where you can have nice food and drinks while waiting for the awards ceremony.

Finishing the Ultimate Fitness Challenge: once you have finished your eight events you are free to go to the Food & Beverage Area for some well-deserved energy intake! The award ceremony will take place about 30-40 minutes after the last group has finished their swim. It will be followed by a lucky draw.

Ultimate Fitness Certificate: if you have successfully done the eight events, you will receive a certificate of extreme health. This certificate can be picked up at Sportsworld from Monday February 27, 2012 onward.
